Hernandez Farinas, Tania.
Coastal areas are highly-dynamic systems exposed to the effect of climate variations and human impacts, influencing the community diversity. In these ecosystems, the phytoplankton constitutes the base of food webs and integrates the effects of global changes and quality variations of coastal waters. In this context, the general objective of this study was to assess the long-term changes in the diversity of phytoplankton communities in coastal waters at different dcales and levels of organisation. Firstly, the data collected by the Phytoplankton and Phycotoxin Monitoring Network from the IFREMER was examined to study the temporal variations of the assemblages within the last two decades along the French coast and to assess the relationship with the...

Lampert, Luis; Hernandez Farinas, Tania.

Assessing Alternative Microscopy-Based Approaches to Species Abundance Description of Intertidal Diatom Communities ArchiMer
Ribeiro, Lourenço; Brotas, Vanda; Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Jesus, Bruno; Barille, Laurent.
Diatoms usually dominate microphytobenthic biofilms in coastal and estuarine intertidal environments. Yet, functional studies on biofilms often skip species analysis because benthic diatoms are notoriously difficult to extract from sediments and challenging to identify at that taxonomic level. Valid, less time-consuming alternatives would surely be welcomed and increase the inclusion of community structure information in microphytobenthos (MPB) ecophysiological studies. Starting with an original 181-species abundances matrix (OSM), obtained during a 2-year spatial–temporal survey in a Tagus Estuary intertidal flat with contrasting sediment textures, the current study assessed the effectiveness of several approaches to species abundances analysis. The...

Assessing phytoplankton realized niches using a French National Phytoplankton Monitoring Network ArchiMer
Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Bacher, Cedric; Soudant, Dominique; Belin, Catherine; Barille, Laurent.
Relating environmental factors to species occurrence is a fundamental step in a better understanding of the community structure, the spatial and temporal dynamics of populations and how species may respond to environmental changes. In this paper, we used phytoplankton occurrence data, from a French national phytoplankton monitoring network, and environmental variables with the aim of characterizing the realized ecological niches of phytoplankton groups. We selected 35 phytoplankton taxa representing the most important taxa in terms of occurrence frequency and abundance along the French coast of the eastern English Channel, the Southern Bight of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. We show that environmental variables such as nutrient concentration, water...

Contribution of benthic microalgae to the temporal variation in phytoplankton assemblages in a macrotidal system ArchiMer
Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Ribeiro, Lourenco; Soudant, Dominique; Belin, Catherine; Bacher, Cedric; Lampert, Luis; Barille, Laurent.
Suspended marine benthic microalgae in the water column reflect the close relationship between the benthic and pelagic components of coastal ecosystems. In this study, a 12-year phytoplankton time-series was used to investigate the contribution of benthic microalgae to the pelagic system at a site along the French-Atlantic coast. Furthermore, all taxa identified were allocated into different growth forms in order to study their seasonal patterns. The highest contribution of benthic microalgae was observed during the winter period, reaching up to 60% of the carbon biomass in the water column. The haptobenthic growth form showed the highest contribution in terms of biomass, dominant in the fall-winter period when the turbidity and the river flow were high....

This deliverable is composed of two reports which propose indice of phytoplankton composition, based respectively on the results of pigment and genetic diversity methods, and the results of microscopy method. Proposals based on the results of pigment and genetic diversity methods. The present work is a continuation of several studies carried out in the past (Siano and Delmas, 2013, 2015) on investigating an indicator of phytoplankton diversity using two methods complementary to optical microscopy: the genetic diversity analyzed with metabarcoding (exhaustive analysis of the diversity and relative abundance of OTUs, i.e. groups of sequences identified by their genetic resemblance) and the pigmentary diversity (analysis of the diversity and abundance of...

Lampert, Luis; Hernandez Farinas, Tania.

Ribeiro, Lourenço; Le Bris, Anthony; Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Buchet, Remi; Dutertre, Mickaël; Metzger, Edouard; Rosa, Philippe; Gernez, Pierre; Lerouxel, Astrid; Barille, Laurent.
In order to establish the ecological status of water bodies, the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) is based on the evaluation of a number of biological quality elements, as well as physical parameters supporting the biology. In estuaries, phytoplankton monitoring was not considered relevant because of the high turbidity characterizing the large metropolitan estuaries and the French overseas departments (Guyana). In this work, we considered the possibility of using microphytobenthos (MPB) as a biological indicator of the ecological status of estuaries. This activity report summarizes the actions undertaken in 2017 under an AFB / Université de Nantes convention, which is structured around two main axes: the first axis is based on the analysis of the...

Realized niche analysis of phytoplankton communities involving HAB: Phaeocystis spp. as a case study ArchiMer
Karasiewicz, Stephane; Breton, Elsa; Lefebvre, Alain; Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Lefebvre, Sebastien.
The link between harmful algal blooms, phytoplankton community dynamics and global environmental change is not well understood. To tackle this challenging question, a new method was used to reveal how phytoplankton communities responded to environmental change with the occurrence of an harmful algae, using the coastal waters of the eastern English Channel as a case study. The great interannual variability in the magnitude and intensity of Phaeocystis spp. blooms, along with diatoms, compared to the ongoing gradual decrease in anthropogenic nutrient concentration and rebalancing of nutrient ratios; suggests that other factors, such as competition for resources, may also play an important role. A realized niche approach was used with the Outlying Mean Index...

The variability of the phytoplankton biomass derived from daily chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) satellite images was investigated over the period 1998–2017 in the surface waters of the English Channel and the northern Bay of Biscay. Merged satellite (SeaWiFS-MODIS/Aqua-MERIS-VIIRS) Chl-a was calculated using the OC5 Ifremer algorithm which is optimized for moderately-turbid waters. The seasonal cycle in satellite-derived Chl-a was compared with in situ measurements made at seven coastal stations located in the southern side of the English Channel and in the northern Bay of Biscay. The results firstly showed that the satellite Chl-a product, derived from a suite of space-borne marine reflectance data, is in agreement with the coastal observations. For compliance with...

Two decades of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. blooms and king scallop (Pecten maximus) contamination by domoic acid along the French Atlantic and English Channel coasts: Seasonal dynamics, spatial heterogeneity and interannual variability ArchiMer
Husson, Berengere; Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Le Gendre, Romain; Schapira, Mathilde; Chapelle, Annie.
King scallop contamination (Pecten maximus) by domoic acid, a neurotoxin produced by some species of the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia, is highly problematic because of its lengthy retention in the bivalve tissue, leading to prolonged fishery closures. Data collected within the French Phytoplankton and Phycotoxin monitoring network (REPHY) over the 1995–2012 period were used to characterize the seasonal dynamics and the interannual variability of P.-nitzschia spp. blooms as well as the contamination of king scallop fishing grounds, in six contrasted bays distributed along the French Atlantic coast and English Channel. Monitoring revealed that these toxic events have become more frequent since the year 2000, but with varying magnitudes, frequencies and timing...
